Chapter 9: After Saturday

"Portia," I said.

Christian didn't move.

He stood there with his thumb at the corner of my mouth and looked at the cut for a long time.

"Where?"

"Henrik's apartment."

"What were you doing at Henrik's apartment?"

I had the truth right there behind my teeth.

It was all I had to say.

The photos are fake. I made it up. I wanted you to let me go because I thought you couldn't stand me.

"Christian, the photos..."

"Wait."

He let go of my wrist.

He took the cloth from my hand, ran it under the cold tap, folded it, and pressed it to my lip himself.

"Is it about Henrik?"

I nodded.

"Is it something you need to tell me? Or something Portia is making you tell me?"

I didn't know how to answer that.

It was both.

"Then don't," he said. "Not today."

"But..."

"Hazel, listen to me." He held the cloth steady.

"For three years I waited for you to come to me because you wanted to. Not because you were scared. Not because somebody hit you."
