Chapter 16: Say It All
Room nine of the Starlite Motor Inn on Cicero Avenue smelled of bleach and old cigarettes.
Ben had paid cash at the desk with Dario's wallet, because Dario was bleeding on the back seat of a stranger's Buick.
He had come out with a key, a plastic pharmacy bag, and a look the clerk had not asked about.
Now he sat on the edge of the bed with the light of the vacancy sign coming red through the blinds.
He cut the ruined shirt off Dario's shoulder with nail scissors.
The stitches had held, mostly.
Three of them had torn, and the skin around them was swollen and angry.
"Sit still," Ben said.
"I'm sitting."
He cleaned the wound with a pad that stank of alcohol.
He pressed gauze over it and taped it down.
His hands were steady, as they always were when he had something to do with them.
When he was done, he put the tape on the nightstand.
"Start at the beginning," he said.
Dario looked at the wall.
For five years he had been silent, and it was plain how heavy the silence had grown.
He spoke.
"My father called me to the club that night and said the bookkeeper had been skimming."
"He gave me a gun to scare him."
"I saw a rifle against the sky on the roof, so I fired, twice, up at it."
"The man in the coat was already down. I didn't know that. Then there was a light in the back door of the bakery, and a kid standing in it."
Ben waited.
"The police came in four minutes. My father had called them himself."
