Chapter 4: Sheet Pan
Ben woke at a quarter to five with the alley in his mouth.
It was the same dream as always: the camel coat, the man on his knees, the white flash.
In the dream, as in the courtroom, the barrel was angled up.
The prosecutor had called that recoil, and Ben had nodded on the stand, because the prosecutor was a smart man in a good suit.
He rolled over.
The big bed was empty, and the lake outside the glass wall had gone the color of pewter.
Dario stood at the window in yesterday's trousers and nothing else, with a mug of black coffee going cold in his hand.
His back was covered in old thin scars Ben had been too busy to look at.
"Your handler sold your name to my father," Dario said without turning around.
Ben sat up in the grey sheets.
"You said that last night with a photograph. That's not proof."
"Russ Odom drove to Beverly the week before the trial and told my father which city they were putting you in."
"Who told you that?"
"A man who was in the car."
"That's it?"
"That's what I have." Dario finally turned. The sunrise was behind him, and his face was in shadow. "You can check it with Russ. I'd do it standing in a crowd."
Ben looked at the ceiling.
Everything in him wanted to call it a lie, and the last four years of birthday texts from Russ sat in his chest.
"I need my starter," he said.
"Your what?"
"My mother's sourdough. It's in a crock on the shelf over the proofing table. It's older than I am, and if it sits unfed for two days it dies."
