Matteo entered Carlo's dining room with empty hands.
He looked first at the empty chair beside me.
I gave the smallest nod I could manage.
Ada had made it through the side hall.
Carlo mistook the gesture for relief.
"She was beginning to think you wouldn't come."
"I knew he would," I said.
Matteo stopped at the edge of the table.
"Where's my aunt?"
"Safe if you agree to talk," Carlo replied.
The side door opened behind him.
Ada stepped into the courtyard with her cane raised.
Matteo's guard met her before Gina reached the hall.
Gina screamed for Carlo, and the room broke open.
I pulled the heavy chair across the kitchen entrance.
It kept one of Carlo's men from coming through.
Matteo caught another man by the wrist before he fired.
