Chapter 23: The Harvest Dance
The envelope came on Friday, by hand, from the company lawyer.
He stood on the porch in his navy suit and would not come in for iced tea.
"Miss Pfluger," he said.
"The county attorney froze Mr. Loessin's accounts on Monday.
"The judge signed an order yesterday afternoon.
"His forfeited commissions and the retainer from his cousin go to the household he spied on.
"In the court's opinion, that household includes you."
"What does that mean?" I said.
"It means," he said, "that Mr. Loessin's money is yours."
I opened the envelope.
I read the number twice.
It was a check for sixty-one thousand, two hundred and eight dollars and fourteen cents.
It was not the whole of Brady's money.
It was the exact balance of my student loans, with interest, to the penny.
"How did you know?" I said.
"Mr. Kneupper told me where to look," the lawyer said.
"He gave me the loan servicer's number three weeks ago."
"Without asking me."
"He asked me to ask the court," the lawyer said, "and not to tell you until the court had said yes.
"He said you'd refuse a gift.
"He said you couldn't refuse a judgment."
I stood on the porch with the check in my hand.
For a moment I was furious.
Then I thought about fourteen months of paying half a truck.
I thought about a rent notice taped to a door, and a man who had called it all temporary.
I was not angry anymore.
"Tell him," I said, "he can't keep doing that."
"Doing what?" the lawyer said.
"Being right," I said.
The lawyer's mouth twitched.
"I'll pass that along," he said.
That was Friday.
On Saturday night the Fredericksburg dance hall threw its peach-harvest dance.
