Chapter 10: The Board Meeting

Jude was on the Halvorsen dock when Britt ran out of the office with her phone in her hand.

"They sent it to everyone," she said. "The Ashworth board's meeting in twenty minutes. Neil's name is on the agenda."

Jude was already moving.

He drove across Port Harlan with both hands tight on the wheel and the same thought going round in his head.

Not like this.

He had spent thirteen years making sure it would never be like this.

The Ashworth conference room was on the second floor, over the drafting hall, with windows on the water.

Eight people sat around the long table.

Neil stood at one end with his back to the glass, white to the lips, a printed page in front of him.

Ansel sat at the other end.

He looked sorrowful and concerned, and he was reading aloud.

"The question the board must ask," Ansel said, "is whether the chairman can be fit for the position, given what the photograph shows. I take no pleasure in it. I love my cousin."

"You love my shares," Neil said.

His voice was thin and steady.

"Neil," Ansel said gently. "The medical record is in front of you. We've all seen it. You're carrying a child. The photo says other things about your body that would have to be explained."

A board member coughed.

Another looked at the table.
