Chapter 14: What I Sent

Wyatt's POV

I did not sleep after the door closed.

I sat on the bottom stair with the black phone in my hand and listened to the cab pull away.

Then I started the story from the beginning, because it was the only way I could stand it.

At the end of March, my sister came to Sunday dinner shining.

She had met a man at work, she said, and his marriage was over in everything but paperwork.

I asked his name, and she told me, and I looked him up under the table while she talked.

The first picture on his page was him and a woman in a cream dress, seven years married, laughing at a lake.

I did not say anything at dinner.

I wish I could tell you I had a good reason.

On the third of April, I followed him from the Loop to a brick building with a Bluebird Lofts sign, and I stood across the street while he signed a lease.

His hand rested on my sister's back the whole time.

I bought the black phone at a drugstore that same night.

Cassia's number was on a contact sheet Monique had left open on her laptop, and I copied it down in the bathroom.

I told myself a woman with proof would act.

I told myself a stranger's word would be a rumor, and a photograph would be a fact.

What I did not tell myself was that I was afraid of her.

I had never spoken to her, and her face on his page looked happy.

If I wrote her one plain sentence, I would be a stranger who knew things about her marriage.
