Chapter 11: Useful
He slid his phone across the table.
It was an email thread from last December.
Kayleigh to Connor, the night they both got into Westmere.
I read it with the chicken parm going cold in front of me.
"Don't tell her yet. If she finds out now, she'll stop drawing. We need the full set of screens for the fellowship. Keep her at Bellgrave. She's useful as long as she doesn't know."
Under it was Connor's reply.
"Okay. I'll handle her. She'll believe whatever I tell her."
I read it twice.
Then I looked up at him.
"You wrote that."
"I know."
"'I'll handle her.'"
"I know, Hal." His voice cracked. "I know what I wrote."
"The scene at dinner. That was you handling me."
He nodded without looking up.
"Why are you showing me this?"
"Because she's going to do the same thing to me," he said. "She's already doing it. I need you to help me take it back."
I almost laughed.
"Help you."
"You know the designs. You know the owl. If you testify that Shelfswap's art was yours, then she doesn't own the brand either. We could rebuild it. Together. The real version."
"The three of us?"
"The two of us."
