Chapter 7: Knock
Iris's POV
I knocked on his door at half past one in the morning, and I did it because I was tired of being the only one who was afraid of how much I wanted it.
The study was at the end of the east hall.
There was a line of yellow light under the door.
I had heard him walk the house until midnight.
Then I had heard him stop outside my room and stay there for an hour.
I had lain on my bed with my eyes open and my hand pressed flat to my own stomach, counting his breathing through the wood.
He had not knocked, and that had undone me more than any hand.
I wore a gray sweatshirt of his and nothing under it.
I knocked twice, not softly.
"Come in," he said, and then, sharp, "Who is it?"
"You know who it is," I said.
A silence.
Then the chair scraped, and the door opened.
He stood there in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow and a pen in his hand.
Papers lay across the desk behind him in the lamplight.
He looked at my bare legs, and at my face, and I watched him set the pen down on the doorframe with great care.
"You said you wouldn't be in a room with me unless I asked," I said.
"Yes," Toby said.
"I'm asking."
His throat moved.
"You said not today," he said.
"It's half past one in the morning. It's tomorrow."
A sound came out of him that was almost a laugh.
I walked past him into the study and shut the door behind us.
I heard the latch click, and I felt it down my spine.
"Here are my terms," I said. "You don't touch me unless I put your hands on me. You don't talk about my brother."
