Chapter 11: Cut Loose
The border Alpha stood over his son with his big hands hanging at his sides.
Dorian knelt in the dirt with blood on his lip.
Three hundred of his own father's wolves watched him do it.
"Get up," the Alpha said.
Dorian got up.
"Take off the coat."
"Father, it's the Hartwell blue. You can't."
"Take it off."
Dorian's fingers shook on the buttons.
He peeled off the pale blue coat with the border pack's silver thread at the collar and held it out.
His father took it and threw it on the nearest cookfire.
It caught slowly, and the smoke was thick and black.
"You are not my son," the Alpha said, so every wolf in the camp could hear. "You are not a Hartwell. You will not be named in my halls, and you will not eat at my table, and if you cross my border again, I will not stop my wolves."
Dorian's mouth worked.
"I did it for us," he said.
"You did it for yourself."
"I was promised the throne."
"By whom?" his father said.
Dorian opened his mouth, and his eyes flicked past the firelight to the dark edge of the camp.
He closed it.
I followed that glance.
At the far edge of the camp, beyond the last tent, a tall figure stood at the tree line in a long grey cloak with the hood up.
She did not move.
The firelight did not reach her face.
I did not know why she frightened me.
Then the border Alpha turned and walked toward me, and I lost her behind his broad back.
He went down on one knee in the dirt in front of me.
