Chapter 15: Behind Her Back

Garrick's POV

They threw me out of the Hollow at the foot of the east stair.

I landed on my bandaged back, and for a moment I saw nothing but white.

"Stay down," one of the grey men said, and spat on the ground beside my head.

They went back up the hill.

I lay there and listened to the iron gate slam shut above me.

I had said I would not go far.

I had meant it, and I had also meant the other thing, the oath I had sworn in a kitchen tunnel with her knife at my throat.

She had given me an order, and she had said please.

She had never said it before.

I sat up.

Twelve border riders waited in the dark behind a wall of rock, where I had told them to wait.

The old border Alpha, Dorian's father, had sent them with me when I asked.

He had not asked why.

"The circle's locked," I told the nearest.

"Can we break it?"

"Not without killing her."

"Then what?"

I looked down the slope toward the torches of Iron's camp, where five hundred wolves were gathering for the third hall.

"Ottoline said she would keep her to dawn," I said. "She will have something at the camp to make the Iron Alpha behave. A man like him doesn't lie down for a woman unless she holds a knife somewhere."

"His family?"

"His family."

It was a guess.

It was a good one, because the Iron Alpha had come to the Hollow this week without his grandsons, and he had never once gone anywhere without them.

"I want the horn," I said.

The young rider handed me the border war horn.

I put it to my mouth and blew it as hard as I have ever blown anything.

It rolled down the hillside, long and low, and the Iron camp went still.

Three torches swung toward the sound.

The riders answered from the rock with three short blasts.

Every grey cloak in the camp turned toward the east, where the noise came from.

I was already running west.

I went through the horse lines on my belly, with my ribs on fire and the whip scars splitting open under my shirt.
