Chapter 24: Ordinary Morning
Evander woke at six because the hound sat on his foot.
Bracken the Third weighed as much as a small pony and had no sense of where a man's feet ended.
Grey light came through the window of the king's bedchamber in Highmere.
It was the second morning of the thaw, a year to the week since the Crowning.
The drip off the eaves was the loudest thing in the palace.
There was no cot across the door.
There had not been one for twelve months.
Florian lay on his side against Evander's chest with a book propped on the pillow in front of him and his spectacles on his nose.
He was not reading.
He was watching the page and listening to Evander wake.
"Good morning, Lord Rask," he said, without looking round.
"Good morning, Your Majesty."
"You were snoring."
"I was not."
"You were doing it in a very distinguished way," said the king.
"Like a bishop."
Evander laughed into his hair.
Florian put the book down and turned in his arms.
His hair stuck up on one side, and there was an ink smear on his cheekbone where he had fallen asleep over the budget.
He looked at Evander's mouth.
"Evander," he said.
"Come here."
It was the quiet voice.
Evander felt it go through him.
"I'm here."
"Closer.
"Don't do anything.
"I want you to lie there and let me."
Florian slipped his hand down the length of him under the sheet and found his cock already half hard, and made a pleased little noise.
Evander shut his eyes.
Florian stroked his shaft slowly, lazily, until it was heavy and leaking in his palm.
Evander stretched out under his hand, and the bed creaked.
