Chapter 10: What the Notes Said

Eli read the page three times.

Then he put on his boxers, because he could not do this naked, and sat down on the windowsill with the paper on his knee.

"February nineteenth," he said. "He's been out for eight months. I did two episodes on the escape."

"I know. I listened to both."

"Of course you did."

Dr. Vandermeer sat on the edge of the bed with a sheet across his lap and his hands between his knees.

He looked, Eli thought, like a man waiting for a verdict, and not at all like a man in control of the room.

"Detective Keogh found that taped under the bunk after the van went off the road," he said. "He showed me a photocopy, because I was the state's expert at the trial and my name is on it."

"My name is first."

"The copier smudged the top line. Paul read it as a retired judge named Farrell for three months." The doctor's mouth tightened. "I read it correctly on the first day."

"And you told him."

"I told him. He said it was probably a fan with a grudge. By June he believed me. By June I had been on your fire escape for twelve weeks."

Eli stared at him.

"Say that part again."

"I went to your building in March. I wanted to see whether Coburn had been there first." Dr. Vandermeer did not look away. "There were fresh pry marks on the sill of your bedroom window. Somebody had tested the frame with a thin blade."
