Chapter 19: The Last Session
The blinds were down when Eli walked into the office on Tuesday at six.
He crossed the room without a word and pulled the cord.
The slats rattled up to the ceiling, and Lake Union opened out behind the glass, wide and slate-blue in the last of the light.
"I always lowered them," Simon said from his chair.
"I always lifted them."
"Yes. I noticed."
"You never said anything."
"I thought it was the last thing I was permitted to deny you."
Eli turned from the window.
Simon sat in one of the leather chairs with a closed folder on his knee.
He wore the charcoal suit and the white shirt open the usual button too low.
There was a plaster on the back of his right hand.
He looked as he had looked on the first Wednesday, composed and beautiful and unreachable.
Eli knew now exactly how hard he was holding it together.
"Sit down," Simon said. "Please."
"Is that the doctor talking?"
"It is the doctor's last sentence."
Eli sat on the grey couch and stretched an arm along the back of it.
Simon held out the folder.
"A colleague," he said. "In Bellevue. Trauma, and men who have been stalked."
"He has agreed to see you on Thursdays. I have written everything down."
"Everything."
"Everything that is clinical. Not the rest."
Eli took the folder and did not open it.
"I can't see you as a patient any longer," Simon said. "I should not have seen you at all. It is the worst thing I have done, and I have done a number of them."
"You've said that."
