Chapter 21: On Air
"Season two, final episode," Eli said into the microphone. "This is Last Seen."
The red lamp over the booth door was lit.
ON AIR, it said, in letters cut from the lens.
Outside the glass, in the dim studio, a tall man sat on the grey couch with his hands on his knees.
He was exactly where Eli had put him an hour ago.
He had not moved once.
Eli's script lay on the desk, and he did not look at it.
He looked through the glass at the man, and he talked.
"Eight months ago, a man escaped a prison van on a wet road in Pierce County. You know his name now. You know what he did on three porches in Snohomish."
"What you don't know is what happened after."
The grey eyes watched him through the booth glass.
They had watched him through every word of the forty-minute take.
Eli's voice went low on the next line, and it caught, and he let it.
"I was watched for six months by a man I did not know," he said. "I was afraid of the wrong thing."
"The man I was afraid of was keeping me alive."
Out on the couch, Simon's hands closed slowly on his knees.
Eli finished the sign-off in one take.
He pulled off the headphones, and flicked the switch, and the red lamp died.
The studio went dark except for the desk lights.
He sat for a moment in the foam-lined box with his pulse thudding.
Then he pushed the talkback key.
"Ginny," he said. "That's a wrap."
A chair scraped in the control room.
Ginny Drummond came to the glass in her yellow raincoat, with her red bob wet from the rain and a pencil behind her ear.
"I cried," she said through the speaker. "In the middle. I'm furious about it."
