Chapter 22: Stay Where You Are
"Wrists," Eli said, and Simon held them out.
The grey wool scarf trailed from Eli's fingers.
It was the same scarf that had hung on the hook by the door of the cedar house, soft and faded and long.
It had been in a dozen photographs.
It had stood in the alley below Eli's window in the cold.
It had been wound twice round a throat on the nights a man waited there with a flashlight.
Eli wound it round the narrow wrists.
He did it twice.
Then he lifted them over Simon's head and looped the long ends through the carved rail of the old bed.
He knotted it twice.
"Pull," he said.
Simon pulled.
The knot held.
He lay naked on his back on the white quilt of his mother's old room.
His arms were stretched above his head and the black hair was spread on the pillow.
Rain fell steadily on the cedar roof.
A single lamp burned in the corner.
Eli knelt astride his thighs and looked down at him for a long time.
"Comfortable?" he said.
"No."
"Good."
"I mean that I am entirely at your mercy, and I have never been more comfortable in my life."
"That was a joke."
"I know," said Simon. "I am learning."
Eli grinned.
He leaned down and kissed him, deep and slow, with his hands braced on either side of the dark head.
Simon strained up into it and the scarf creaked on the rail.
"No," Eli murmured against his mouth. "You stay where you are."
"Yes."
"You can't touch. You can't move your hands. You can't come until I say."
"Yes."
"And you watch me. The whole time. If you close your eyes I stop."
"I will watch."
"That's a promise."
"It is a vow."
Eli sat back on his heels.
