Chapter 10: Lunch With the Bench
The Pelham house on South Battery has a white piazza on three levels and a view of the harbor that cost four generations of Pelhams their consciences.
I wore the grey linen suit and my grandmother's pearls.
Anson wore a dark jacket and no expression.
A housekeeper in a starched apron took us through a hall full of ancestors and out onto the second-floor piazza, where a table was laid for four under a striped awning.
The judge rose and held out both hands.

He kissed my cheek.
His skin smelled of bay rum and the soap of a man who has never done a hard day's work.
"Mr. Gaillard. I'm so glad you could come."
"Judge," Anson said.
He did not offer a hand.
Lawson stood behind his chair, thin and pale, in a pressed blazer, with his eyes on the tablecloth.
"Detty," he said. "I'm sorry about the other night."
"I know you are," I said.
"I was drunk," Lawson said.
"I know that too."

The housekeeper brought iced tea and a plate of shrimp salad.
The judge talked for a quarter of an hour about the weather and the oyster beds and a case from 1994, and he did it beautifully.
