Chapter 25: Lina's
He didn't argue.
That was the worst part.
He sat in the chair with Lina asleep on his chest and looked at me for a long time.
"Why?" he said.
"Because you were at that table today because I put you there," I said. "I cooked the dinner. I laid the papers down. Your mother read the letter."
"I know."
"I don't know what you are when nobody hands you a chair. Neither do you."
He looked down at Lina.
"Will you let me write to you?"
"You can write," I said. "I don't promise to answer."
He nodded.
"That's fair."
We left Philadelphia on the first of May, in Orsola's truck, with Lina in a car seat between us and the heater on furnace.
Livio carried the car seat down the stairs on Passyunk himself and buckled it in.
He checked the straps three times.
Then he stepped back onto the curb with his hands in his pockets and watched us pull away.
He didn't follow.
Lubec was still cold in May.
The lobstermen were on the bench outside the post office, exactly where I'd left them.
The tall one saw the truck and stood up.
