Chapter 5: Chlorine
The pool was lit from underneath, and the water threw slow blue shapes across the high ceiling.
Kenji stood on the deck in his oldest swim trunks with his towel in a ball against his stomach.
It was eleven on Saturday night, and the Astoria Aquatic Center was empty and echoing and smelled of chlorine and rubber.
A kickboard held the glass door open behind him.
"You came," Soren said.
He was floating on his back in the middle of the lap lanes, arms spread, one big foot slowly turning water.
He rolled over and swam to the edge in six strokes.
Then he rested his chin on his folded arms on the wet tile, grinning up.
"You said to wear shorts I hate," Kenji said. "I'm wearing the ones with the flamingos."
"I love the flamingos."
"Why is the door propped?"
Soren's grin slipped for half a second.
"I don't like it shut," he said. "It's a thing. Come in."
"I told Leif I was going to the library."
"You told him that after you kissed him in the kitchen, so it's fine." Soren held out a dripping hand. "Come on. I'll teach you the butterfly."
"You will not."
"I'll teach you something."
Kenji dropped the towel.
The tile was cold under his feet, and the water, when he sat on the edge and put his legs in, was warm.
Soren caught him by the hips and slid him in, and Kenji came down against wet muscle with a gasp.
The shallow end was chest deep on him, and up to Soren's ribs.
"You're shaking," Soren said.
"You're naked."
"I'm wearing my practice suit," Soren said.
"Barely."
Soren laughed, and kissed him.
It was nothing like Leif's kiss, or Erik's furious mouth on his thigh.
Soren kissed the way he did everything, wholeheartedly, with his whole big body.
Tongue and teeth and a low moan at the back of his throat made Kenji's knees weak.
His hands cupped Kenji's ass under the water and lifted, and Kenji wrapped his legs around his waist and hung on.
"I've been thinking about this," Soren muttered, between kisses, "since you moved in. Since you made that stupid soup. Since you laughed at my terrible jokes at dinner and didn't pretend."
