Chapter 9: Sunday Dinner

Tilda had made a seating chart.

It was taped to the dining room door in her tidy handwriting, and Kenji read it twice.

"Why am I next to Erik and across from Leif?" he asked.

"Because Soren talks with his mouth full, and Erik needs somebody to kick," Tilda said. "Sit."

Sunday dinner at the Lunde house happened at six, at a long scarred oak table that had been their mother's.

Tonight Leif had made clam chowder in the big blue pot.

There was a loaf of bread from the bakery on Commercial Street and a salad nobody would eat.

Kenji had brought rice balls, because he could not help himself.

"These are good," Soren said, with his mouth full. "What's in the middle?"

"Salmon."

"I want forty," Soren said.

"You can have six."

"Seven," Soren said, and took seven.

Erik sat rigid beside him, eyes on his bowl.

He had not looked at Kenji since the linen closet six days ago.

He had passed him in the hall three times and said "Tanabe" each time.

Kenji put his foot against Erik's under the table, and pressed.

Erik went red to the hairline.

"Stop it."

"I haven't done anything," Kenji said.

"You are, with your foot."

"What's he doing with his foot?" Tilda asked.

"Nothing!" Erik said, much too loudly.
