Chapter 10: Eli's Receipt

Eli's POV

Howard Sorensen's office was on the thirty-first floor, and every wall in it had a clock.

There were nine of them, set to nine cities, and none of them was wrong.

I had been in that room once before, two years ago, and I had walked out of it with a check.

I did not sit when his assistant told me to.

"Dr. Kearney." Howard didn't stand either. He was reading something, with his rimless glasses low on his nose. "You're eleven minutes early. I appreciate that."

"I'm not here to be appreciated."

"Nobody ever is."

Estelle sat on the white leather sofa by the window, with a cup of tea balanced on her knee.

She smiled at me.

"It's good to see you, Eli," she said. "You look better. Denver agreed with you."

"I'm here about the gala."

"I imagined you might be."

"Take me off the invitation."

Howard looked up.

"Why would I do that?"

"Because I'm not going to stand next to your daughter in a room full of your donors while you wait to read out a number."

"Then don't stand there." Howard closed the folder he'd been reading. "Tell her yourself, before Saturday. I've told you that since the day you left."

"You told me you'd ruin me."

"I told you what my wife had already written to the medical board. It was a draft. Estelle?"

"A very polite draft," Estelle said. "I never sent it. You never gave me a reason."

I looked at her.

I was thirty-two, and eight days into the nicest thing that had ever happened to me, when she phoned.

I sat on the floor of my apartment with the phone against my ear while she read me the draft.
