Chapter 23: Her Name on the Door

In April, Saltmarsh House opened for the second time, and this time nobody hung my name on a program and took it down again.

The sign went up the night before.

It was a plain slab of oak at the foot of the drive, with the hotel's name cut deep in white.

Under it, smaller, were the words: Owned and operated by Marden Hospitality.

My assistant, who ran the front desk now and wore a better headset, stood beside me in the dark with the work lamp.

"Say something," he said. "It's historic."

"It's a sign."

"It's your sign."

I ran my thumb along the carved M.

"It's a very good sign," I said, and my voice went unsteady, and he politely looked at the sea.

The wedding was at two.

It was a small one, sixty guests, in the same ballroom with the same chandeliers.

The bride was a nurse who had worked on my mother's floor three years ago, and she had written me a letter in January that said she'd always wanted to marry somewhere that overlooked the water.

She had no money.

I wrote her a bill for one dollar and she paid it in a card with a pressed flower.

I planned the whole day myself, in my own blazer, with the same headset I had worn on the worst Saturday of my life.

The florist finished the arch at noon.

The band tuned up.

My team set out sixty chairs, and every one of them had a name card on it in my handwriting.
