Chapter 9: What the Folder Held

Langston's taillights were still on the road when my lawyer's car turned in.

She had driven up from the city after the ceremony, and she carried a leather folder under her arm.

Enid let her into the kitchen and put a fourth bowl on the table.

"I pulled the courthouse record yesterday," my lawyer said. "I didn't want to tell you until I'd read it twice."

"Read what?"

She opened the folder and laid four pages in a row.

"This is what Langston slid beside your marriage license."

I looked at my own signature.

It was there four times, in my blue work pen, in a hurry.

"This one is a loan note," she said. "Your savings, paid into his hotel company, with a stake in return. This one transfers the shares to you, fifty-one percent."

"Why would he give me the shares?"

"Because the bank wouldn't lend to a company with nobody behind it. Your savings were the only real cash in the room. The lender wanted the money's owner to hold the control."

"Then why wasn't I told?"

"He had you sign at a counter, in a rush." She tapped the third page. "And this is a power of attorney. It lets him sign for you on anything touching the company."

Enid set the teapot down.

"He's been signing as my daughter," she said.

"For three years. Every filing, every loan renewal, every board vote. Each time, Langston signed as Flora Marden's agent."

I pressed my palm flat on the table.
