Chapter 20: The Ring on the Chain

Lucas's POV

The detective came to my hospital room at six in the evening with a paper bag of beignets and news.

"We have him," he said.

I sat up too fast, and the stitches pulled.

"Easy," Celia said from the chair.

"Where?"

"A motel on the Slidell road. Julien Lacombe gave us the room number himself, at two this afternoon."

"He walked into my office, sat down and said he'd tell me anything I wanted."

Celia's hands went still in her lap.

"Why?"

"Because you told him it wasn't enough."

She didn't answer.

"We took the boss at four," the detective said. "He had the pistol under the pillow, and two of the brothers' cousins with him. They'll all talk by morning."

"And the mother?" I asked.

"Mrs. Lacombe asked to see me an hour after her son did. She'd heard what he gave us. She's making a full statement."

"Against her son?"

"Against everyone." He opened the bag and put it on my tray. "Eat. You look terrible."

He left.

The room was very quiet.

Celia was looking at the window with her chin on her fist.

"That's it, then," she said. "The garage, the men, the boss. It's over in this life."

"It is."

"I keep waiting for something else to happen."

"Nothing is going to happen."

"I know. I only wish my body believed it."

I put out my hand, and she took it, and I tugged her onto the edge of the bed.
