Chapter 20: The Aide
I sat down in the kennel run.
Juniper came and put her head in my lap.
"That's a real bite," I said into the phone.
"It is," my lawyer said. "Is it your dog's?"
"At two fourteen on Saturday, my dog was asleep in Quincy."
"Can you prove that?"
"I'm about to."
The vet in Quincy saw me at eight the next morning, before her first appointment.
She didn't ask why. She'd seen the video. She'd seen the grant office email, because I forwarded it at midnight.
She turned her monitor around on the exam table.
"Drop-off, seven forty-one. Your signature, the ugly one." She scrolled. "Sedation at ten oh five. Cleaning done at eleven forty. Then recovery."
She clicked a folder.
"Our recovery kennels have cameras. They take a still every fifteen minutes, with the time burned in."
Juniper, on a heated blanket in kennel four, nose on her paws.
One fifty-nine p.m. Two fourteen p.m. Two twenty-nine p.m.
