Chapter 21: Brendan's Coin
"I'll call you back," Niall said.
"Before nine, please. We go to print Thursday night."
He hung up.
He stood in the middle of the bay with the phone in his hand.
"Our source," I said.
"Kiera."
"Kiera."
He dialed the family lawyer.
I heard the clipped voice through the speaker without trying to. Confidentiality clause. Injunction. Sue the paper by noon. Sixty jobs on that school contract.
"Draft it," Niall said, and hung up again.
"You're going to sue a newspaper," I said.
"I'm going to stop a lie."
"Is it a lie?"
He didn't answer.
At nine the side door banged open.
Brendan came in without knocking, his hood up, his face white.
"She called me," he said. "The reporter. She called me first. Did you know that?"
"Bren..."
"She asked me if it's true the family paid off my victim. And I said yes. I said yes, Niall, because it is."
Kerry came out of the supply closet with a bag of kibble in her arms and froze.
"Upstairs," I said. "Both of you. Now."
The bunk room still said FIREHOUSE CHILI RULES on the wall.
