Nobody in Sallie's said anything for a long moment.
Then Sallie reached up and turned the TV off.
"Well," she said. "That's a lie with a ribbon on it."
Lawton set his spoon down.
"She knows the deckhand talked," I said. "So now she's not a woman who faked her death. She's a poor lost thing who washed up on a beach."
"And the man who picked her up out of the water is just a drunk who got confused," Lawton said.
"And everything she spent was the bartender stealing it."
He looked at me.
"I'm going to the airport," he said.
"So am I."
"Rue, there'll be cameras."
"Good," I said. "If she's going to say your name on television, she can say it to my face."
Clancy drove.
Sallie came too, in her good blouse with her reading glasses on her head.
"I'm not missing this," she said. "I'd pay a cover."
The arrivals hall at Charleston International was a zoo.
Four TV crews.
Twenty reporters.
A crowd of strangers holding grocery-store flowers and signs that said WELCOME HOME MARIEL.
