Chapter 15: Guest Right

Solveig's POV

The Silverbrook gate had never looked so small.

I had walked through it ten thousand times with a grain ledger under my arm, and it was a wooden arch with a bar across it and a boy asleep on a stool.

The boy woke up and saw me on a grey horse.

Then he saw the Alpha of Frostmark beside me, and fell off the stool.

"Go and tell the hall," I said. "Tell them Solveig Sandiford is home and is asking for guest right for the man beside her."

He ran.

Behind us the wagon rolled in with its canvas pulled low.

I had told the girl and the shaved one to stay under it and keep their faces covered, and neither had argued.

Elias and Perrin walked their horses at the back of the line.

I did not turn around.

By the time we reached the pack hall, the whole yard was full.

They stood in rows, in work aprons and cloaks, women with flour on their arms, men with their sleeves rolled, children on their fathers' shoulders.

Nobody spoke.

I knew every face.

I had balanced the accounts for most of them.

My father stood on the top step with two guards at his back and his hands clasped in front of him.

He looked older than I remembered, and exactly as large.

"Solveig," he said.

"Father."

"You were told to come home alone."

"I was told to come at once, under threat," I said. "I'm coming now, at my own pace, with a guest."

"Guest." He looked at Kjell. "This man holds my daughter against her will, and has made himself an enemy of my pack."

"I hold no one," Kjell said.
