Chapter 11: Up the Hill

Ji-an looked up at her uncle from the plastic chair.

"You should ask the doctor, Uncle," she said. "I'm not well. Everyone says so. Maybe I see things."

He stared at her.

"Or maybe I just came to apologize for the engagement party," she said, "and he fell. And I was the only one at that table who picked up a phone."

The young doctor in green scrubs was still standing ten feet away, writing on a chart. She had stopped writing.

Myung-ho saw her.

He straightened his jacket, nodded to her pleasantly, and walked away down the corridor.

Tae-gyeom watched him go the whole way to the elevator.

"He's frightened of you now," he said.

"Good."

"No," he said. "Frightened men are worse."

Two weeks later, Ji-an's grandfather could say her name.

It came out slow, with the edges blurred. But it was her name.

He was sitting up in the VIP room on the eleventh floor with a tray of rice porridge he refused to eat and a view of the Naksan wall.

"Ji-an," he said.

"Grandfather."

"Read to me."

She picked up the newspaper.

He shook his head slowly and pointed at the stack of documents on his side table. Insurance forms. A consent form for physical therapy. Something from the board secretary.

"Everything," he said. "Before I sign. Read everything."

So she read every page of every form out loud to him while the afternoon light went gold.

When she finished he looked at her for a long time.

"Sixty years," he said, each word on its own, "I signed. What they gave me."
