Chapter 4: Two Billion

The Hanseong Welfare Foundation had six desks, a water cooler, and a framed photo of Ji-an's father cutting a ribbon.

When Ji-an walked in, all six staff were standing against the wall.

A detective in a brown jacket sat at her mother's desk.

A man in a navy suit with a laptop sat beside him. Ji-an knew him. He was her uncle's auditor.

Her mother stood in the middle of the room in her good navy suit from the district office.

She was holding her handbag in front of her with both hands.

And Uncle Myung-ho was leaning in the doorway of her office, eating one of her tangerines.

"Ji-an," he said. "Come to say goodbye to your mother's job?"

Tae-gyeom came in behind Ji-an and stopped just inside the door.

Her uncle's eyes went to him and away.

"Two billion won," the auditor said, to nobody in particular. "Withdrawn from the housing relief fund over eighteen months. Mrs. Seo is the only signatory on the account."

"I never took a won," Ji-an's mother said. "Not one."

"Then where did it go, Mrs. Seo?" Myung-ho asked, gently. "Did you lose it?"

Two of the staff looked at the floor.

In her first life, Ji-an hadn't come here.

She had been at a dress fitting, and she had let her uncle tell her on the phone that it was a misunderstanding.

Her mother was charged in May.

She sat in a courtroom for a year in that same navy suit, and the light in her eyes went out and never came back.

At the trial, her lawyer finally found where the money had gone.

By then nobody was listening.

Ji-an went and stood next to the auditor.

"Open the transfer records," she said.

"Ms. Seo, this is a police matter."

"Then the police will want to see them. Open them."
