Chapter 9: The Hill

"I said yes," So-hee said, marching past Ji-an into the kitchen.

She put the envelope on the long table and sat down in front of it.

"I took his money. I told him I was hurt you'd married without telling me first, and that I'd happily report on you." She unwrapped a candy. "I'm going to lie to him for five million won. Is that legal?"

"It's very legal," Tae-gyeom said, coming down the stairs in a T-shirt. "It's also excellent."

So-hee looked at his arms and then quickly at the ceiling.

"What does he want to know?" Ji-an asked.

"Where you go. Who you meet." She crunched the candy. "Especially if you go anywhere near Ahyeon-dong."

Ji-an sat down across from her.

"Then tell him I am," she said. "Tomorrow. The residents' meeting at the senior centre on the hill. Five o'clock."

"Ji-an." Tae-gyeom leaned on the counter. "He'll send Daerim."

"I know."

"You want him to."

"I want them on camera," Ji-an said. "And I want everyone on that hill to see who sends them."

So-hee pushed her glasses up her nose.

"I'll bring my good phone," she said.

The Ahyeon-dong senior centre was one room with heated floors, a television, and a drinks fridge humming in the corner.

Fourteen people sat on cushions along the walls. Most of them were over seventy.

They watched Ji-an take her shoes off at the door.

Tae-gyeom had stayed at the bottom of the hill with the car.

"If they see me," he'd said, "they'll think Myeongsan has come to buy them too. Call and I'm up the stairs in two minutes."

So-hee had wedged herself beside the drinks fridge with her phone propped on a stack of bingo cards.

"I'm Seo Ji-an," Ji-an said. "I'm on the Hanseong board."

"Then you're the one who lost," said a grandmother in a quilted vest. "We saw the news. What good are you to us now?"

"Cameras," Ji-an said. "On every gate on this hill, by Monday, paid for by me. And a lawyer for every house that wants one."
