Chapter 17: Three Thousand

The skiff came at the turn of the tide, and the woman poling it was dressed in mourning white.

She did not say a word as she brought it alongside the slip.

She only held out a hand to Lin and steadied him over the gunwale.

"Your adjutant ran to the Frost Market with a bell in his hand," she said to Jiang.

"He said the prince was in danger.

My father poled this river for forty years."

"Madam," Jiang said.

"You don't owe me anything."

"I know I don't."

She pushed them off from the stone.

"Get down under the nets, General.

Your head shows."

They went up the Long River for two nights under tarred sacking, with Lin's head on Jiang's knee.

She poled through the dark without sleeping.

On the third dawn she put them ashore at Stone Ford.

Jiang had stood on this bank once with a bow.

The ford lay wide and shallow and brown before him, with the north bank a blue smear across it.

On the south side stood a camp of twelve thousand Liang soldiers in white tents and trampled snow.

The tall banner over the garrison gate bore the crown prince's colors.
