Chapter 17: Lamplight
I did not say anything clever to him.
I crossed the loft, took his face in my hands and kissed him until the sheets stopped swaying.
He made a low sound against my mouth, and his arms came around me hard.
Eight years I had been a woman who chose her words.

"Come," I said, and led him down the three steps to the little room off the loft.
It had a pallet, a window over the river and the laundry master's lamp.
The lamp threw a small gold circle on the boards and left the rest of the room in shadow.
Daveth shut the door behind us and leaned on it.
His coat was already half off one shoulder.
"I am thirty-two years old," he said, "and I have never been so afraid of a room."
"I'm twenty-seven, and I've run a palace with a quill. Sit down."
"Is that an order?"
"It's the first one I've given all week that I wanted obeyed."
