Chapter 18: Sabelle's Rite
I read the proclamation on the gate with the whole morning market watching me.
It had been nailed up at first light, a thick sheet under the king's red wax.
The herald stood beside it with his hat in his hands.
"The Midsummer order," he said unhappily. "I cried it as I was told, Majesty."
"By whom?"
"It came down from the chancellor's office, under the seal."
I read it twice.
At dusk on Midsummer the crown of Caldermere would be placed on the head of the Lady Sabelle Vassey in the great hall.
The Queen's vow would be taken at noon, in the Abbey chapel, three miles north, before the Abbess and no one else.
If the Queen failed to say it by noon, she would be unwritten and held in the tower, and the crown would pass at dusk.
Behind me the crowd was murmuring.
They were pressed close, bakers and grooms and a girl with a basket of eels.
They were not looking at the paper.
