I held my last council in the great hall at noon, because it was the only room big enough for everyone I meant to thank.
I wore the blue gown I had worn to the banquet, and I did not wear the crown.
The crown sat on the long council table in front of me, on a square of white linen.
The chancellor, the treasurer and the steward took their places on the benches.
The steward was pale and quiet.
His seat had been moved down the table since the grain accounts, and he had not complained.
Behind them, along the walls and up the gallery stairs, stood the palace staff.
Nobody had told them to come.
Edmar sat at the head of the table without his crown, which was in front of me.
He had asked to come as a witness only.
I stood and unrolled the first scroll.
"For eight years I have held the household accounts, the grain book, the almoner's rolls and the keys to every storeroom in Hallowfen," I said.
