Chapter 21: The Answer
By dusk on Midsummer the great hall held nearly a thousand people, and not one of them was talking.
They had come in from the river town and the farms and the palace stair.
They stood along the walls and up the gallery rails, and the doors were open to the courtyard so those outside could hear.
The long council table stood in the middle of the floor with its square of white linen.
It was empty.
I stood at the head of the table in the blue gown.
My hair was pinned flat, the way I had always worn it, because I wanted the court to see what they had never looked at.
Daveth was at my right, the Book open on his arm.
Catrin and the head cook stood behind him.
The two old queens sat in carved chairs by the dais, with a blanket on the older one's knees.
The Dowager stood alone beside them, in grey, with no braid pins.
The Abbess waited at the great doors with her ledger and two Sisters, and the last red light lay across her face.
