Chapter 22: The Nameless King
I could not tell you what name the King had given away.
I had stood ten feet from him and heard every syllable, and it had gone out of my head.
I write the old name in this account only because Daveth kept it in the Book, and I copied it off the page.
I walked around the council table to him with the ring in my hand.
"Isaveth," he said, as easily as a man says the time of day.
Every person in that hall heard him say it, and kept it.
"By the old right of the queens of Caldermere," I said, "a queen whose name is written in the registry belongs to herself."
"Archbishop, you will find the words."
The Archbishop turned pale and then, slowly, almost smiled.
"There is such a right," he said. "It has not been used since the vow was dropped."
"Then I use it. I release myself from the crown and from the marriage made under it."
"I take no lands, no pension and no title. I ask the King to let me go."
