Chapter 21: The Ring
On the Saturday of Juhannus the sun would not go down.
The pack built its fire on the flat above the lake, a stack of birch logs as tall as the hoist house.
The sky behind it stayed pale until midnight.
Two hundred wolves stood in a ring of stones around the flames in clean shirts and green wreaths.
I carried the lamp up the hill from our kitchen window in both hands.
The flame stood small and gold in the wind, and I shielded it with my body the whole way.
Before the ring, Petroc found me by the stones.
I broke a heel off the rye loaf I had baked at four that morning and held it up to his mouth.
"I brought you this," I said. "You've had nothing all day."
He took the bread from my fingers with his teeth.
His lips closed around the tips, and his tongue flicked once against them.
I felt it in my knees.
"You're hungry," I said.
"Yes," Petroc said, looking at me.
Then he stepped over the stones into the ring.
Madern was waiting by the fire.
He wore his deacon's black coat in the heat, and he had a prayer book under his arm.
