Chapter 23: Petroc's POV

Petroc's POV

I woke at five in a gray room with the window dark and nothing in it.

I lay on my back and listened for the thing I had listened for all my life.

It was the low steady growl of the wolf in my chest.

It was quiet.

It was not the quiet that came when she touched me.

It was an ordinary quiet, the quiet of a man waking up in his own body.

Marja was in the kitchen below me, banging a pot on the stove.

I went down in my pants and found her in my flannel shirt, with her braid undone, and nothing under the shirt.

She looked at me across the room, and she did not say a word.

I took my belt off the back of the chair, where it had hung since Christmas.

I held it out to her.

"I'm not doing this because I'm afraid," I said. "I'm doing it because I want to. I'm going to know the difference now."

She took the belt.

Her eyes were gray and very bright.

"Kneel," she said.

It was the same word she had said in the Dry, and the lamp was cold in a cupboard upstairs.
