Chapter 20: Caspian's POV
Caspian's POV
I rode out to the Stonegate camp alone, an hour after midnight.
Sorcha was asleep when I left, one arm flung over my side of the bed.
I did not wake her.
I had made a promise not to speak for her, and I was going to a tent to break it.
The northern camp lay in a hollow below the ridge, forty tents and a ring of banked fires.
A sentry saw my face and let me through without a word.
The Stonegate Alpha sat outside the biggest tent with a haunch of mutton on his knee.
He did not stand.
"My King," he said, mouth full. "You're up late."
"Half the Ironcrest pack is on its knees in a ditch."
"Is it?" He wiped his fingers on his thigh. "Bad luck. Quarry people can't hold their drink."
"You sent them the barrel."
"I sent a gift. I won't have it said the north has no manners."
"It was dosed."
"With what?"
I waited.
He grinned.
"I'm not a poisoner, Majesty. I'm a fighter. If the elder's friends saw fit to improve the ale, I wasn't told."
"You knew when you rode into my yard."
"I knew nothing. I knew that a girl who has spent three years taking wolfsbane every morning has a weak wolf. And I know the old law."
"The old law lets me set the day."
"It does."
"Then I set it for three days from now."
"And I refuse the delay." He picked up the mutton again. "The old law lets the challenger refuse a delay if the heir was already in the yard. She was. It's noon tomorrow, and I'd be a fool to wait for her friends to get better."
