Chapter 19: Bait
He turned around and saw me.
He saw the coffee in my hand.
"I'll call you back," he said into the phone, and hung up.
The rain was coming in sideways under the shelter roof.
"Who was that?"
"My sister, miss."
"Your sister wants to know if I have any idea."
He looked at the coffee. Then at the shop window behind me.
"Mr. Devane told me not to talk to you," he said.
"Then don't."
I set the coffee down on the bench beside him.
I crossed back at the light and went into the shop and took out my phone.
"Come now," I texted. "Wait at the car."
It took him twelve minutes.
Una saw my face and put down her iron.
She came and stood beside me at the window without asking anything.
When the black car pulled up, I went out into the rain.
Una came out behind me.
She brought the bat. She didn't lift it. She just held it at her side.
Cormac got out.
He looked at me. Then at the man in the peacoat, who'd stood up off the bench.
I watched him understand that I knew.
"Tell me what he's for," I said.
"Orla."
"You're good at answering. You answered everything on the step at Nessa's party. Answer this. What is he for?"
The man in the peacoat looked at the ground.
Cormac didn't.
"Three weeks ago," he said, "I let it get back to Senan that the tape was in the shop. Through a cousin who drinks with his men. I wanted them to come for it."
The rain was running off my hair into my eyes.
"You wanted them to come here."
"I wanted them to come where I had a man waiting. One of them talks, I have Senan in front of the family. Not on a tape. In a room."
