Chapter 34: Philomena

"Stay up here," I said.

"Orla..."

"She's on my step. I'll answer my own door."

He nodded and sat back down on the bed.

I pulled on a sweater and went down through the dark shop.

Through the glass, Philomena looked smaller than I remembered. The snow had settled on her shoulders and she hadn't brushed it off.

I opened the door a foot.

"Mrs. Devane."

"Orla." She held out the cake box a little, then seemed to think better of it. "I took the first bus after the plows. I should have telephoned."

"Yes."

"I'm at the inn on Market Street. Two nights." She swallowed. "I came to ask if I might see my granddaughter. You said, at the hospital. Unless Orla says so. So I'm asking."

She'd heard every word in that corridor.

So had I.

I looked at the suitcase. I looked at her hands, shaking a little on the box.

"Supper," I said. "Six o'clock. Here. One hour."

"Thank you."

"Nessa's had the flu. If she's tired, you go."

"Of course."

She turned to leave and then turned back.

"Is my son here?"

I didn't lie to her.

"Yes."

She nodded once, and went off down the white street toward the river.

Nessa was thrilled and suspicious in equal parts.

"Is Grandma staying forever?"
