Chapter 11: Repossessed

On Monday morning I stood across the road from Kyle's dealership with a coffee, and I watched the tow truck back into the lot.

Lana stood next to me in her gray coat, and the lawyer sat in the car with the heater running.

"Are you sure you want to be here?" Lana asked.

"I paid for that truck for years. I want to see it leave."

The dealership was a long glass showroom with balloon arches and a banner that said, "ASK FOR KYLE."

Kyle's black truck sat out front in the manager's spot.

The loan on it was in my name.

On Friday I had called the lender and told them to take it back, and they had been very polite about it.

The tow driver hooked the front axle and raised it with a mechanical whine.

A couple walking out with a brand-new minivan stopped to watch.

A salesman in the doorway whistled.

Kyle came out of the showroom in his leather jacket, with a coffee cup in his fist, and stopped dead.

"Hey! Hey, what are you doing? That's mine!"

"Sir," the tow driver said, holding out a clipboard, "this vehicle is being repossessed on behalf of the lienholder."

"I'm the owner!"

"The loan's in the name of Tanner Briggs."

Kyle spun around and scanned the road.

He found me.

His whole face went purple.

At the same moment a white van with a satellite dish on its roof pulled into the lot, and a reporter in a red blazer climbed out of the passenger side, followed by a man with a camera.
