Chapter 17: The Board
The medical board met in a long beige room at the military hospital in Bethesda, with a strip of white tape across the floor.
The tape lay forty feet from the door.
That was the walking test.
Lorne had to cross it with no cane and no hand on the wall, and he had to finish upright.
If he could not, the Army would retire him at the end of the week.
I stood in the corridor outside in my good dark dress with my certification badge pinned to the lapel.
I had no right to be there, but he had asked the board to name me as his therapist, and Harlan's lawyer had made sure they did.
"Miss Fitzhugh."
The man who spoke was tall and gray, in a dress uniform covered in ribbons, his eyes hollow with exhaustion.
He had Lorne's jaw.
"General Strickland," I said.
"I would like three minutes."
I did not want to give them.
I thought of how stiffly Lorne said "my father," and I nodded.
The General stood close and spoke low.
"My son sat in front of the Inspector General on Tuesday and put my name in a sworn paper," he said. "I will lose my foundation. I will lose the boards."
"I know."
"You did this."
"Your son did it," I said. "I didn't ask him to."
His jaw worked.
"I will make you an offer," he said. "I will give you a check for any amount you name, today. You step away from him before he walks through that door. A man in his state should not be made to carry a woman's disappointment into that room."
He drew a slim checkbook from his jacket.
