Chapter 22: Lorne's POV

Lorne's POV

I walked the drive at dusk, as I had every evening for nine days.

No cane, no one beside me, forty-one paces to the first lamp and sixty to the gate.

The sergeant had stopped telling me not to.

I was at the gate when a car came up the road with its headlights low, and I stopped walking.

It was a plain gray sedan, not a black one.

Wynne got out of the driver's side in her old gray coat with the scorched cuff.

She had her braid back, and her hands were bare.

"I drove myself," she said. "I wanted to see if I still could."

"You could always drive."

"Not on my own account." She shut the door and leaned on it. "I read your note."

"I'm sorry about the note."

"Don't be. It's the best letter I've had in my life." She took a breath. "I'm going to say my terms, and you're going to listen to all of them, and then you can decide."

"All right."

"One. Nobody lies to anyone. That's your rule, and it goes both ways, and it includes the lies you tell yourself at four in the morning."

"Yes."

"Two. You ask. You don't tell me where you'll be, you ask me what I want, and every time I'm allowed to say no."

"Yes."

"Three." Her voice caught for a moment. "I'm opening a clinic at Hollow Rock Farm in the spring, and I'm not leaving it. You're going to Germany, and I'm not asking you not to."

I felt something in my chest go very still.

"I own a jet," Wynne said. "It's eight hours. I looked it up. I'll be there on the weekends, and you'll come home when you can, and we'll be tired and stupid and in love. That's what I want."

I stood in the dark with my hands open.

"Say it again," I said. "The last part."

"We'll be tired and stupid and in love."
