"No," I said.

Edgar's smile stayed where it was, but his eyes sharpened.

"No, I didn't take the car," I said. "And no, I don't drink. I was too busy cooking for people who did."

"Wynne," Edgar said gently.

"Bree drove it." I did not raise my voice. "She came home at two in the morning on the third with the front bumper hanging off. I was in the pantry, and I saw it."

"That's a lie," Bree said.

"The next morning Edgar had the car towed to a private lot, and reported it stolen." I turned to Lorne. "Four nights ago he put a paper in front of me at her engagement dinner."

"It said I was the driver. I wouldn't sign, so they put me out at midnight."

The room was silent.

Bree's handkerchief had stopped moving.

"The call from the coordinator came that same night," I said. "I didn't know whose house I was coming to until I got here."

"Colonel," Edgar said. "You can see what she is. She's trying to protect herself."

"I knew the car was theirs," I said to Lorne. "I knew it from the first night. I saw the file on your desk the first morning, with the plate highlighted. I should have told you. I didn't."

Lorne's face did not change.

"You sat in that chair at two in the morning," he said, very quietly. "I told you I would find them. I told you how it happened. You let me say all of it."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I thought you would hate me," I said. "Because I'm the only person from that house who ever came near you, and I thought you'd think I was part of it."
