Chapter 16: The Wall

By seven o'clock the ballroom held two hundred people, forty-eight banners, and one man with a microphone who loved all of it.

Kit stood by the buffet in his one good jacket, trying to look like a waiter.

It was not working.

The jacket was navy, and the waiters wore black, and a woman had already asked him for a napkin.

"Ladies and gentlemen," said Rupert.

He stood on a small stage under the chandelier, which now had every bulb, and held his phone at chest height.

"Love you all for coming."

The room applauded.

"Hollowmere is a story about a family that can't say what it feels," said Rupert.

"And tonight we say it for them. With a little help from a very special voice."

He gestured at the wall.

"Forty-eight sentences, written over five years, by a man who has never once been kind to our star."

"Catastrophe," said Kit, to the buffet.

"Sorry?" said the woman with the napkin.

"Banner six. It says disaster. It's catastrophe."

"Who is Seventh Row?" said Rupert, in a voice like a drumroll.
