Chapter 17: Seventh Row, Revised
The staircase scene was shot the morning after the launch.
Kit watched it from the back of the hall with a headache and a vol-au-vent stain on his cuff.
A man in a camel-coloured costume coat stood halfway down a flight of oak stairs, in no hurry at all.
Dorian stopped on the sixth step.
He did not lift his hand.
He did not lift his chin.
He looked at the empty hall below him.
What happened in his face took about a breath, and was not for anyone.
Then he turned round.
"Print," said Vera, and for once did not say it to the floor.
Kit stayed where he was until the crew had gone to lunch.
He found that he was holding a pen.
He had taken it from the continuity desk without asking, which for him was a theft.
He owed Dorian a review, and he had never in his life owed anyone one he could not write cruelly.
That night he sat at the desk in his guesthouse room with a laptop and a cup of tea he had made too strong.
He typed: Dorian Frobisher is a master of the long staircase.
He read it back.
