Chapter 12: The Lobby at Dawn

I found my shirt on the floor and put it on inside out.

Isla pulled her cardigan over her bare chest and buttoned it wrong.

We looked at each other for half a second, and then the pounding came again.

"Stay up here," she said.

"No."

"It's my door."

"It's my life behind it," I said, and went down the back stair first.

The foyer was grey with early light.

On the other side of the glass stood a woman in a wet trench coat with a suitcase beside her.

Her blonde hair was plastered flat.

She had no makeup on and her mouth was white.

It was Demi.

I had known her face for six years, and I had never once seen it without a performance on it.

Isla turned the key.

The door swung in on a gust of rain, and Demi stepped inside and stopped.

She looked at me, at my shirt, at Isla's cardigan and at the buttons.

I watched her take in every detail, because she had always been quick.

"Hello, Jas," she said.

Her voice was small and hoarse.

It was not the voice she used for the camera.

"How did you find me?" I said.

"Dennis has your phone location. He's had it since March." She wiped her face with the back of her wrist. "He doesn't know I'm here. I told him I was at a spa. I got on the first flight out of Newark and I haven't slept."

"Demi, this is Isla," I said. "She owns the cinema."

"Of course she does."

Isla held out her hand.

Demi looked at it and shook it.

"You're the one from the video," Demi said. "The one who threw Wyatt out."

"I gave him a refund voucher," Isla said. "It was fair."
