Chapter 8: What She Never Asked
Ray hauled us out of the creek with a chain and a big diesel truck, and he did it whistling.
"You two look like a pair of wet cats," he said.
He wrapped a wool blanket around my shoulders himself and poured coffee from a thermos into the lid.
"Hood of a truck in a rainstorm," he said, handing it to me. "That's friendly."
"It was the only dry spot," I said.
"Sure it was."
His eyes were kind, and they went from my face to Ryan's, and back.
"Sam, you've got a bride in two days, son," he added with a smile.
"I know, Ray."
"I'd keep the creek between us, if I were you. Kat has enough on her mind."
He winked, and went to hook the chain.
I drank the coffee, and I did not feel any warmer.
That night I could not stay in the house.
The barn was dark except for the string lights we had hung together, and under them Ryan sat on a hay bale with his elbows on his knees.
He looked up when I came in.
"I thought you'd go to bed," he said.
"I thought you'd be in the trailer."
"I was. Then I wasn't."
I stopped three feet away and folded my arms.
Everything I'd planned to say had left me, so I said the oldest thing instead.
"You never asked whether my parents were okay."
He did not move.
"Your father's company took everything they had. My mother cried in the kitchen for a month. My dad sold his boat and told us he was tired of it." My voice cracked, and I let it. "And you vanished by text, and you never asked."
